Pfizer made their reputation in the US by bulk manufacturing chemicals for drugs. They had a breakthrough success in 1949 with an antibiotic drug called Terramycint.
This drug alone catapulted them into being an international pharmaceutical company. Pfizer moved a compounding operation to the UK in 1952.
Pfizer is the largest pharmaceutical company in the UK, and the top supplier of drugs to the NHS. In 2005, over 2 million UK patients a month were prescribed a Pfizer medicine.
Pfizer invested £600 million in research & development during 2005, one of the largest R&D investment amounts in the UK. Pfizer are well known as a diabetes innovator.
