A new study conducted in Finland has found that type 2 diabetes is a significant risk factor for Parkinson’s disease .
Parkinson’s disease is a disease that impedes the movement. Common symptoms include restricted flexibility, rigid muscles, and tremors. The disease has been clearly linked to diabetes, although the researchers remain not entirely sure what causes the link. The results of the study are to be published in Diabetes Care.
The researchers found that those who had type 2 diabetes were over 80 per cent more likely to develop Parkinson’s than non- diabetics . The association between the two diseases was relevant for both men and women.
The researchers predicted that: Diabetes might increase the risk of Parkinson’s disease partly through excess body weight .” However, the conclusion of the team was that more work needs to be done to explore whether excess body weight caused increased risk of Parkinson’s disease.
