Study to assess drugs in adolescents with diabetes

A new five-year long international study to assess the efficiency of statins or ACE inhibitors amongst adolescents with type 1 diabetes may determine whether these drugs lower the risk of developing diabetes complications .
Diabetes UK, the British Heart Foundation and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation will fund the study. Diabetes complications are unfortunately common amongst people with type 1 diabetes, but both statins and ACE inhibitors could lower complications risks.
A team of experts at Cambridge University will coordinate the Adolescent Type 1 Diabetes Intervention Trial. Professor Dunger, of the university, reportedly commented: “Diabetes significantly increases the risk of heart disease and is the leading cause of endstage kidney failure. By working with high-risk adolescents, this study will help us to find out whether statins and ACE inhibitors can prevent these devastating complications at the earliest stage.”
