The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a new diabetes drug for the treatment of type 2 diabetes . The diabetes drug has been in clinical trials for some time, and some US physicians are understood to be relieved to now be able to prescribe the medication .
The drug, Victoza, has been brought to market by Novo Nordisk . Victoza stimulate the pancreas to provide more insulin to patients with diabetes, but only when glucose levels are high. This means that insulin injections do not take blood sugar as low as with some other drugs.
Victoza has also caused a stir because it can lead to weight loss by suppressing the appetite. Victoza is taken once daily, as opposed to Byetta which is taken twice a day. It is expected that Victoza will be prescribed within the next two weeks. However, Victoza is expensive, and many specialists believe that the drug will mostly be used in combination with other diabetes drugs .
