Abbott has issued a warning that some sensors on its FreeStyle Libre 3 blood sugar monitoring systems may need replacement to avoid inaccurate readings.

According to Abbott Diabetes Care, testing has revealed that some sensors in the FreeStyle Libre 3 system might erroneously report high blood sugar levels.

Such inaccuracies can lead patients to take unnecessary insulin.

The affected sensors are from these lot numbers:

  • T60001948
  • T60001966
  • T60001969

Abbott Diabetes Care estimates that less than 1% of U.S. users are affected.

This image shows how to identify if the lot/serial number on a FreeStyle Libre 3 glucose monitor is one of those being recalled.

The FreeStyle Libre 3 continuous glucose monitoring system comprises a sensor, a reader, and an app, enabling diabetes patients to monitor their blood sugar levels without finger-prick blood tests.

The first Abbott FreeStyle device was approved by the FDA in 2017.

Speaking to the Associated Press, Abbott Diabetes Care has confirmed it will replace the affected sensors free of charge.

Customers are advised to visit Abbott Diabetes Care’s website to check if their sensor is impacted.
