Young people with presymptomatic symptoms of type 1 diabetes were more at risk of developing the condition during the COVID-19 pandemic, new research has underscored.

A team of researchers from Munich examined the health data of 358 young people before the pandemic and 396 afterwards.

All of the participants had presymptomatic symptoms of type 1 diabetes.

More than 50 of the participants went on to develop type 1 diabetes before the pandemic, the study has reported.

Meanwhile, 113 of the participants developed the condition during the pandemic, the research has revealed.

A total of 236 of the participants contracted COVID-19 during the pandemic, according to the results.

The authors said: “During the pandemic period, the incidence rates of type 1 diabetes were 8.6 while participants had tested negative for COVID-19 and 14 after COVID-19 infection.

“The findings are consistent with previously reported acceleration of progression in children with presymptomatic type 1 diabetes by viral infection.”
