Preparing for the flu |

As little as we may want to admit it, summer is over, and the nights are drawing in. As the weather gets colder, we all need to be prepared for the war against man's most hated enemy: the common cold.
Although everyone is susceptible to viruses and falling ill, we have to be even more wary if we have diabetes.
Whether it is a cold, virus, flu or stomach bug, illnesses can make it extra difficult to manage blood glucose levels as our bodies have to turn it up a gear to fight off invading bacteria or viruses.
If you do fall ill this winter, remember to look after yourself. This might sound obvious, but a lot of people add extra pressure to themselves when they are ill.
Taking a step back and relaxing will likely do your body good. However, that said, you should prioritise diabetes management to make sure your blood glucose levels are under control, as this will help you recover faster and stay healthy without any problems.
Testing more than usual when you are ill will help to spot any abnormal fluctuations and deal with them sooner. If you don't have a glucose meter, you can get one and learn everything you need to know here.
Don't forget that if you have diabetes, you can get a flu jab free on the NHS. It’s well worth it - why take the risk?
