World Health Day 2016: Beating diabetes and 11 ridiculous responses

Today is World Health Day and this year's theme is beating diabetes.

The World Health Organisation wants to raise awareness that diabetes rates are increasing worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.

Roughly 422 million worldwide have diabetes – this figure is 4 million in the UK – and this year’s World Health Day is aimed at preventing diabetes and providing better treatment for people with the condition around the world.

Insulin is not easily accessible in some areas of the world, and the recent refugee crisis highlighted that people with diabetes generally remain untreated during times of crisis.

This is why raising diabetes awareness is so important. Not only will healthy lifestyle choices be promoted today, such as reducing intake of processed foods and exercise, but more effective management strategies for diabetes will be considered all over the world.

One particular treatment that has shown to be clinically and anecdotally beneficial for people with diabetes is eating a low-carb diet. Not only can the diet improve HbA1c, but it can also prevent people at risk of diabetes from developing type 2 diabetes.

To this end, we released the Low-Carb Program in 2015. The free 10-week education program can help with weight loss, improve glycemic control and reduce dependency on medication.

Education programs are one of many ways we are looking to increase diabetes awareness.

The Hypo Training Program is currently celebrating 67,650 members - so if you're at risk of hypoglycemia or just want to know more, it's definitely worth taking part. There is a version for people with diabetes and also parents of children with diabetes. We are delighted that this year’s World Health Day is championing education!

We recently reported on how a very low calorie diet could reverse type 2 diabetes for up to six months. To make sense of these findings, Benedict reviewed why this study is so important and what significance it has for future diabetes research.

Lastly, check out Jack’s blog detailing 11 quick responses for ridiculous comments about diabetes. They’re diplomatic, but make concise points, and could prevent you from being asked those same things again.

Have a happy Thursday!
