Testing the bionic pancreas
Lead
The development of an artificial pancreas is something that gives enormous hope to those of us with type 1 diabetes, as it would transform the way the disease is treated.

Many different artificial pancreas systems are being tested across the globe, and though none are yet available to the public, researchers are edging closer, with trials of these devices continuing to show encouraging results.

As well as removing the need for daily insulin injections, studies suggest that using an artificial pancreas can significantly improve blood glucose control.
Hot Artificial pancreas systems
One artificial pancreas that stands out from the rest is the so-called bionic pancreas.

This novel device goes one step further by using a smartphone and a glucagon pump, in addition to a CGM sensor and an insulin pump, to improve diabetes management by automatically delivering glucagon doses to help the body better respond to low blood sugar.

Trials of the device took place last year, and one of those given the fantastic opportunity to test the system was American teenager Christopher Herndon.
