Stemming diabetes |

This week researchers have shown that stem cells can be developed in the lab, then transplanted into mice where they mature into successful insulin producing cells.
The researchers note that the factor in the success of getting the stem cells to mature properly was a protein called estrogen-related receptor gamma (ERR-gamma).
Not to be outdone, researchers from Switzerland have found a way to take stem cells from fat tissue and program these to become insulin producing cells.
A clever bit of genetic coding and the fat drawn by liposuction was converted into insulin-producing beta cells, just like those found in the pancreas.
The benefit of using stem cells is that it can bypass the need for anti-rejection drugs. When you take cells from someone’s body, modify them into a different cell (such as a beta cell) and then transplant them back, the body recognises the genetic code as its own and doesn’t try to reject the cells.
Stem cells don’t yet represent a cure as we still don’t know how to hold back the destructive immune response of type 1 diabetes. However, stem cells certainly hold a lot of promise for improving the success of islet cell transplants.

Edinburgh man reverses diabetes |

A man from Edinburgh, diagnosed in his thirties, has fought back against type 2 diabetes and reversed his condition.
After getting over the initial shock of the diagnosis, Craig Thomson sought out as much information as he could and found a diet that saw him shed a large amount of weight and bring down his sugar levels.
The story shows that, with the right guidance, it is entirely possible to get sugar levels back to a healthy range without the need for medication. See how Craig reversed his diabetes.
Craig noted that it was a low carb, high fat paleo diet that helped him to get his diabetes so well controlled. On Friday, news emerged showing full fat dairy to be linked with a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes compared with low fat dairy in the diet.
For many years, reversing type 2 diabetes was widely believed to be impossible. However, in recent years, we’ve seen more and more evidence demonstrating that type 2 diabetes can be reversed.
There’s more than one way to reverse type 2 diabetes with different diets and exercise showing success. As more success stories appear, more and more people are finding the confidence to take on type 2 diabetes. Join the conversation in the Diabetes Forum.
