Are all diets really the same?
Lead
We’ve learned that diets are all the same when it comes to helping people/you lose weight.

That doesn’t mean there’s no difference between diets, but it does mean that if you’re looking just to lose weight, then you’re best deciding which diet you will be most likely to stick to.

A review of 48 different diet trials showed that there was no real difference in terms of weight loss as the calorie limits were all roughly equal.
Hot Diets are all the same for weight loss
When choosing a diet, there are a number of factors you’ll want to take into account. Low carb diets tend to be particularly good in terms of achieving a swift improvement in blood glucose levels, whereas a Mediterranean diet tends to be one of the easiest diets to stick to.

On a similar note, trending news today includes an American study that has shown consumption of fruit and vegetables was associated with lower risk of hypertension.

As any weight loss diet involves a certain amount of restriction it’s important that any other medical conditions you have are taken into account.

This could include vitamin or mineral deficiencies or if you have conditions such as pancreatitis or IBS. For this reason you should discuss with your doctor if you make any substantial changes to your diet.
Hot Choosing a diet for weight loss
Recently, it was reported that a non-diabetic teenager died after taking insulin in what was believed may have been an attempt to lose weight.

Taking insulin does not help with weight loss. However, missing insulin shots has been used as a very risky way of reducing weight by people with type 1 diabetes.
Hot Non-diabetic teenager takes insulin overdose
Deliberately missing insulin doses, called diabulimia, risks ketoacidosis and greatly speeds up the development of diabetic complications such as sight loss, kidney failure and damage to the nerves that control the organs.
Hot What is diabulimia?
For many of us, once we’re pointed in the right direction in terms of a diet we can stick to, the excess weight begins to decrease, but for some of us it’s not that simple.

Diabetes Forum member summer dreamer found it took 2 months of sticking to a diet before the weight started to come down.

How do I test for ketones?
If your blood sugar is high, it is an indication that you do not have enough insulin in your system (or that the insulin that you do have is not working effectively).

There’s a chance that your body will start breaking down protein in order to get some energy. Ketones are made when the body breaks down proteins.

Video Guide: What is a healthy diet?
Video guide
There is no one diabetic diet that will work for everyone and people should pick a diet that matches their individual needs. Although, having said that, a number of foods can sway your blood glucose levels. For example, potato can hit blood sugar quite hard so a good tip is to swap potato for either sweet potatoes, or for even lower carb counts you can use swede for mash or celeriac for chips. Watch Ben explain what consitutes a healthy diet and what exactly 'a balanced, healthy diet' means.

What is ketosis?
Ketosis is a state the body may find itself in either as a result of raised blood glucose levels or as a part of low carb dieting. Low levels of ketosis is perfectly normal. Ketosis and ketoacidosis are subtly different.

However, high levels of ketosis in the short term can be serious and the long term effects of regular moderate ketosis are only partially known at the moment.
