Plants or plant parts have long been used for medicinal purposes, with more and more people in the West becoming aware of the benefits herbal medicines can have for treating illnesses and disorders such as diabetes.
For those of us with diabetes, plant-based therapies such as cinnamon and ginger have been shown to reduce blood sugar levels, help maintain or improve blood sugar control, lower cholesterol levels and improve overall health.
That's not to say they are risk-free, however. Some can interact with prescription diabetes drugs, increasing the risk of hypoglycemia, so it's important to speak to your doctor first before taking a more natural approach to diabetes treatment.

One plant that is labelled by some as a 'superfood' for diabetes is okra, or ladyfingers.
Parts of the vegetable (okra pods) are known to have a wide range of health benefits, and studies suggest this include helping to reduce and stabilise diabetic blood sugar levels.
