Steroids, statins + weight training

Corticosteroids, which are used
to treat a number of conditions including rheumatoid arthritis
and chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease, have a particularly strong link and longer term usage of steroids can lead to the development of type 2 diabetes.

When this occurs, it can be referred to as steroid induced diabetes.

For people with diabetes, taking steroids can result in increased insulin resistance and higher than normal blood glucose levels, which may cause achieving blood glucose level targets more difficult than usual.

Corticosteroids and diabetes

This week's news reveals that researchers have uncovered that high levels of steroids in the body can prevent androgen receptors from working properly, explaining why steroids cause body fat to be put on and muscle mass to decrease.

Statins and hyperglycemia

Another type of medication that has been linked with higher than normal blood glucose levels is statins.

Researchers looking to verify risks of increased type 2 diabetes in statin found that participants on statins had higher blood glucose and triglyceride levels than those not on the drugs.
