Hypo alert dogs, pet diabetes care + driving

Today we're celebrating the vital support that Millie and other assistance dogs provide to their diabetic partners.

Only last week, a man with type 1 diabetes who lost consciousness
was rescued by his assistance dog following a severe drop in blood sugars.

After seeing him fall to the floor, the canine, called Millie, took action that led to the quick arrival of paramedics.

How Millie saved her diabetic partner

Some assistance dogs are specially trained to care for people with diabetes who are unable to recognise signs of low blood sugar in their owners (hypo unawareness).

Canines given this training are known as hypo alert dogs.

This month pet owners are being encouraged to get their animals tested for diabetes as part of this year's Pet Diabetes Month.

A simple online diabetes screening programme has been created to give pet owners the chance to assess their pets' diabetes risk and make them aware of the main symptoms of the disease.

People with type 1 diabetes have a higher risk of osteoporosis. Whilst a clear link has been found, researchers are yet to understand the
mechanism behind it.

Read about the risk factors as well as how
osteoporosis can be prevented and treated.

Dawn phenomenon

A number of us need to deal with dawn phenomenon, a process whereby the liver
releases sugar into the blood around the time of waking up.

Dawn phenomenon, also known as liver dump,
may explain why sugar levels are higher first thing in the morning than through the rest of the day.

Driving and hypoglycemia

Hypoglycemia whilst driving is very dangerous so people at risk of hypos need to keep their blood glucose levels above 5 mmol/l at all times when driving.

Read our guide which outlines how to prevent hypos occurring and, should they happen on the road, how best to safely treat them.
