Halloween, whole grains + genetics
Lead
Want the fun of taking part in Halloween without the high and lows of blood sugar levels? With a bit of planning, this is achievable.

A Halloween party will be easier for someone with diabetes if some of the focus is switched away from sweet foods.
Hot Diabetes at Halloween
These days most supermarkets and many confectioners now have sugar free sweets which are close to indistinguishable from sugary sweets.

For colour and real drama, you can’t beat home prepared foods and with home baking, you can also control what goes into them. See our low sugar treats for a range of ideas.
Hot Low sugar treats
The diabetes technology of previous decades is enough to make your average trick or treater run for the hills and some of us have repressed memories of some of the torture devices we used to be exposed to.
Guide Take a look, if you dare at the
Halloween screamers!

Counting the carbs
Carbohydrate, or carb counting is a good way of eating healthy.

But for those of us with type 1 diabetes, carb counting has a different role - it helps us match our insulin treatment requirements with the amount of carbohydrates we consume so that our blood sugar levels remain under control.

Whole grain foods
If you're a fan of grain-based foods such as bread, rice or pasta, try to opt for nutritional whole grain foods over refined, white varieties.

Whole gain foods like brown rice are a good source of minerals and vitamins, include more fibre and have less of an impact on blood sugar levels than their non-whole grain equivalents.

Genetics
The genetic information we inherit from our parents play a major role in the risk of developing both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Neither type of diabetes may be entirely genetically determined, but it is a widely accepted fact that the risk of developing either condition increases considerably if your parents or siblings have diabetes.
